WEB-EXCLUSIVE HOME TOUR

Tour a Once-Dated Tuscan-Style Home That Got a Soothing Refresh

The serene Pacific Palisades house was refashioned by AD100 designer Mandy Cheng

Practicality and usability proved important touchstones. “Those are things I’m always mindful of,” the designer says. “There’s nothing museum-like, nothing too precious.” She refers to the dining room, where she left the floor bare. “If we were to put a carpet there, to go with this style of house, it would have to be a vintage Persian—and then there would be avocado all over it,” she laughs, acknowledging the realities of life with little ones.

A practical mindset especially informed the design of the kitchen, which needed to hold the collection of culinary gear the wife had amassed during her time as a pastry chef. Here, Cheng seamlessly combined lovely form and livable function in traditional Shaker-paneled and more contemporary flat-front cabinets and drawers. Glass-fronted cabinets towards the top of the double-height space keep the walls from feeling like they’re closing in on you, as do the sparkling backsplash walls of zellige tiles.

The family moved in around Thanksgiving last year, and Cheng reports that they love living in the house: “It functions so well for them, which is my favorite thing to hear.”

Clients can often be nervous about having her come visit, Cheng says, but she always enjoys sneaking a peek at how people go about their daily lives in the spaces she designs. “I get to see this very pristine, very beautiful dining table that I picked…and it has puzzle pieces all over it,” she says. “Yes, it’s fancy, but they’ve found an everyday use for it. That makes me really happy.”
