At this point, we’ve seen quite a few colors that paint brands expect to define 2022. If there’s any emerging consensus, it’s that we’ll all be stepping outside our color comfort zones with the help of earthy, yet intriguing, shades. PPG’s choice of Olive Sprig was one chief example. And now, paint company Glidden, which is affiliated with PPG, has struck a similar note with its selection of Guacamole as its 2022 color of the year.
Laugh factor aside, Guacamole possesses soothing, organic qualities, which speak to our search for something rooted in nature as we continue to emerge from our collective cocoons.
Appropriately enough, evidence suggests that Guacamole belongs both in the homes and kitchens of consumers. According to a Harris Poll survey cited in Glidden by PPG’s announcement, 62% of Americans are willing to take the plunge and experiment with green paint. The brand also cited a serving of Guac paint set against a white subway tile backsplash as a potentially delectable look.

Kim Perry, part of the team of 30 color experts at Glidden paint by PPG who made the final selection, believes that the time is right to dip into Guacamole. “We’ve all saved beautiful green kitchens and earthy-inspired bedrooms on our Pinterest boards and TikToks over the past year and a half,” she said in the press statement. “Now, with a little elbow grease and Glidden paint, DIY-ers and procrasti-painters everywhere can make their social screenshots a reality.”
Though certainly a color that fits the moment, there’s no doubt that at least part of the fun of opting for Guacamole is in its name. And for any millennial designer and client who’s endured lectures about how their love of avocado toast would prevent them from becoming homeowners, the irony of smearing some Guacamole on the walls of their first home may be too delicious to pass up.
